As I sit here writing this in the command/navigation station on the boat, I feel a slight rocking as we are tied to the dock. It's a beautiful day here in Huntington, NY, but a hot one. Windows open and fans on below decks. I made sure to put the Scop Patch (for seasickness) on last night and I slept well in my bunk. I do believe it is making me drowsy though. My eyes are heavy, my mind is a bit foggy and my reactions to things are not as fast. Let's just say, I did not walk in a complete straight line down the dock to the bathrooms. I am experiencing a bit of dry mouth and throat. My vision seemed slightly blurred as I followed along in Scripture this morning at West Hills Baptist Church. BUT, all is well and I'm excited to be here!
Oh, I guess I should tell you, I am on a sailboat headed for Bermuda tonight (July 5th) and will return to the states on the 21st! Why am I doing this? This is my first tangible step in getting my captain's license but also a symbolic one for my sailing ministry (On Trek Ministries)! I am working at acquiring the 360 days of sea time that is needed for this license which will probably take 2-3 years, depending. However, I must start somewhere! The boat is a 48' SWAN and I am sailing with a crew of 6, including myself. We all come from different backgrounds and experience in sailing. One crew member has been involved with the Clipper Around the World race but is on hold due to Covid. Two others have a lot of sailing experience in the ocean. And one from Arizona is just learning.
The anticipation is huge as I think about what it is like to be out in the open ocean for days without any sight of land. We probably won't get to the ocean until Monday. We are taking our time as we will meet up with a few other boats for the start of the "Bermuda Spirit Rally". We are not racing but I think a couple are. Captain Hank told us we will be the first American tourists in Bermuda every since the shut down.
The Lord has certainly provided opportunity already to witness and speak of how Jesus brings peace. Thankfully there is another Christian on board! This is an answer to prayer. When we talk of the Lord it opens up doors for those who are listening in on the boat. I also met a really nice couple who were docked near us and we chatted for a while.
Apologies for grammatical errors and not giving all the information! I blame the Scop patches.
Also, here is the website for the Bermuda rally. You can track us in the ocean by using a number from the website. The name of our boat is called Avocation. It should be up and running by tomorrow (July 6th).
Here's a tour of the boat! Hopefully this gives you an idea of what it is like. This will be my home for about 10 days .
